Review Summary
The beginning of a series of films that helped spark the modern superhero era, Spider-Man, starring Tobey Maguire, is an action-filled experience with a colorful cast that distinguishes itself as a cornerstone of comic-to-film adaptations.
Beginning traditionally, as most comic book films do, we are given the origin of Marvel’s premier web-slinger, followed by an introduction to the classic Spidey lineup, including Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane, James Franco as Harry Osborn, and, of course, Willem Dafoe as Norman Osborn, the Green Goblin.
Impeccably portrayed by J.K. Simmons, J. Jonah Jameson — complete with trademark cigar and rampant editor-in-chief antics — provides enough entertainment to justify seeing the film even if you don’t know who Spider-Man is — because Jameson doesn’t!
The music composed by Danny Elfman is masterful; who could expect less from this industry titan of film scoring?
With consistent dialogue that builds toward a climactic duel between Spidey and the Goblin, the film does not fall short of expectations. It is a movie that can be enjoyed time and again. “Nuff said”…
Oh, and there is a cameo by Stan Lee.
