Review Summary
Wonder Woman (2017) is a long-overdue adaptation that was timely in casting Gal Gadot in the starring role. Her athletic physique and strong voice are irreplaceable, and the finesse with which she plays the part sets a new epic standard.
The origin and related lore largely remain intact, although the setting of World War I instead of World War II diverges from the original Golden Age concept. This, however, is a well-placed adjustment, given that World War II stories have been overrepresented in mainstream productions.
The plot offers enough turns to maintain interest throughout the gracefully shot action sequences, of which there is no shortage. The focus stays on Wonder Woman while allowing the supporting cast to remain cohesive and relevant to the screenplay.
Gal Gadot’s natural accent is adapted to the Amazon culture, which is a smarter choice than imposing an artificial accent to fit the role.
Overall, Wonder Woman remains an impressive portrayal of one of DC Comics’ classic headliners. The only thing missing is the Invisible Jet.
